Formerly known as Madras, Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is not a very old city by Indian standards, only some 350 years old. It was founded by the British when they established the Fort St. Georges along the shore. The city has many sights, such as the Fort St Georges, temples and museums, and a wonderful beach where you can easily spend a few days. Besides being a perfect starting point for exploring the rest of the state, it is the hub of local travelling. For those interested in fashion, Chennai is south India's fashion capital.
