Leh is one of the most important towns in Ladakh and is well connected to Srinagar by the long road through the Kashmir Valley. The small winding streets, the colourful houses and the main sights will undoubtedly make you stay a bit longer before you set off for a rafting trip, a trekking or another state. The most impressive sight is the Leh Palace that rises high above the rest of the town at the end of the main street. Besides that, there are various temples and gompas. When coming from Srinagar, Leh is one of the best options from which to start your onward trekking tour.
The religious festivals which are held in winter is a come together for all people in this region. In summer time, two famous sports, archery and polo, get the people come together. If you want to have a good look at Ladakh before you actually go there, watch "Dil Se" directed by Maniratnam.

Festival Details The festival of Ladakh is going to be held in Leh from September 1 to 15 and is organised by the government of Jammu and Kashmir. The festival will start at the main bazaar next to the Polo Ground. The main attractions of this festival are mast dance, live music and folk dances performed by locals. You will see them dressed up in their traditional costumes. Rafting, archery competition and dramas by the lamas are aslo attractions. You can also buy local products, handicrafts, thankas, murals, artifacts, and agro products from the fair. Contact the officer in charge at the Jammu Kashmir Tourist Office for more details.
